Squamous metaplasia, the process by which mature, non-squamous epithelium is replaced by stratified squamous epithelium, is a well-described phenomenon in the endocervical canal of both women and laboratory animals. In the human cervix, this process has been shown to develop in stages. Websquamous metaplasia, endometritis (Fig. 3), endome-trial polyps, mircoglandular hyperplasia (Fig. 4), and tubal metaplasia. None of them demonstrated any signiﬁcant endocervical lesions. Among the patients with repeat cervicovaginal smears, one patient had a diagnosis of atypical squamous cells of undetermined signiﬁcance.
